  Youth Engaged

What is Youth Engaged? Youth Engaged is a program connecting students to their watershed and the larger community in a positive way which emphasizes personal responsibility, academics and community service. It’s a partnership between SWRP, the Johnson Creek Watershed Council, Oregon Trout, and six schools who have signed on for the 07-08 school year. This program has received funding from Metro’s Nature in the Neighborhoods program, The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, and the WHH Foundation. For more information about the program, contact Christine Steele at christine@jcwc.org.

Overview of the program’s 3 interlocking components:

  1. Each group will be matched with a site within the Johnson Creek Watershed to steward for the year through pulling invasive plants, planting natives, mulching, etc.

  2. Working with SWRP, each group will conduct water quality testing at these sites twice during the school year and develop projects, culminating in the SWRP Summit on May 16, 2008.

  3. Each group will be given the opportunity to interact with the larger community by ‘anchoring’ their site for the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s annual Watershed Wide Event on March 1, 2008. As a bonus, the JCWC will also feature the student’s SWRP projects at the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Annual Meeting luncheon, May 22, 2008, at a pre-luncheon poster session. As part of the program during lunch, one group will be selected to make a 10 minute presentation.

Our funding will provide some support for buses, substitutes, and cover all fees for SWRP trainings. The staff of SWRP, the Johnson Creek Watershed Council, as well as our partner Oregon Trout’s Healthy Waters Institute will be available as needed to assist with curricular tools, site visit coordination, etc.

YE Calendar for 2007-2008 School year

September

  • Sept 27, 6- 7pm, Youth Engaged meeting for all teachers after SWRP meeting.

  • The JCWC will work with each YE educator to choose a site to steward that’s appropriate for each group. Each teacher/facilitator will be given a scope of work for their site, as well as any necessary information about accessing the site, etc.

October

  • The first sampling/site stewardship visits occur.

  • Classroom visits for "Virtual Tour of the Watershed" can be scheduled.

December/January/February

  • We will contact you by email to confirm details for the Watershed Wide Event.

  • We would also like to set up times to meet with each group in February to give brief classroom presentations about the community Watershed Wide Event (this will be its 10th year!).

March/April

  • The Watershed Wide Event occurs on March 1. Note: this is a Saturday—other school groups have used this as an opportunity for their students to earn service learning hours or extra credit.

  • The 2nd SWRP teacher meeting occurs.

  • The 2nd site visit for water quality sampling (and the 3rd site visit for stewardship) occurs.

May

  • SWRP Summit on May 16, 2008.

  • JCWC’s Annual Meeting luncheon on May 22, 2008. The JCWC would like to feature the student’s SWRP projects at the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Annual Meeting luncheon, May 22, 2008, at a pre-luncheon poster session, and as part of the program during lunch, one group will be selected to make a 10 minute presentation.

We look forward to working with all of you and your students through the Youth Engaged program! Please don’t hesitate to contact either of us if you have any questions or concerns.
